NOTEBOOK: VanGorder looking toward the future
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Tigers may be six games into their most forgettable season in a generation, but they're apparently no closer to finding answers to their defensive issues.
Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said Saturday that he was encouraged by several things he saw during the first three quarters Auburn's 41-20 loss at Ole Miss.
Everything in the fourth quarter, though, was a mess.
"You get what you earn in this business," VanGorder said. "We're at the ground level trying to build our house and it's going to take a lot of work. The pace of the game and a little bit of awkward offense, we're not really ready to execute at a high, high level like we would like to right now. We never had control of the game, but we were kind of managing the game and then we let it get away in the fourth quarter. That's the bottom line."
VanGorder said he doesn't think the Tigers' 1-5 record make his job more difficult on the practice field. Still, he indicated that the coaching staff must begin considering developmental goals when considering their personnel deployments.
