Day 4 Rewind: Focus on Linebackers

Across the parking lot, echoes of music could be heard as Coach Riley and Ryan Gunderson added another dimension to practice. A wide variety of music from Rick Ross to Guns & Roses and finally the ever popular "Call Me Maybe" had players grooving as practice got underway. The best part was Feti Unga busting a move to "Call Me Maybe."

Special teams focused on kick off and field goal. Former OSU place kicker Justin Kahut was on hand to watch Trevor Romaine boot every kick off at least three yards into the endzone. Romaine did have a slight breeze at his back, but great hang time and distance to be sure.

Moving to field goals, Romaine made from 32, missed two from 37, and then made his final attempt from 37 while the team simulated an end of the half/game scenario.

As reported on yesterday, Colin Kelly in fact did not return to practice today, but he is hopeful that he will be back Saturday. Stiffness and precaution seemed to be the main factors in holding the big right tackle out for another day; he was walking around with a minimal limp all practice.

Rumors arose concerning Jashwa James and a potential position switch, he worked solely with the linebackers today and didn't spend any time with the D-tackles, he did however line up at wide out for the scout team on one occasion, so that could be a possibility down the road. (Joking)

Anthony Watkins sat out the majority of practice with what Coach Riley called hip flexor problems. Tyrequek Zimmerman stepped in for the senior and seems very versatile, playing both safety positions well. It remains to be seen where Zimmerman will land or if he will be set to fill in at either position but the options that Coach Perry has with both he and Peter Ashton is certainly a positive.

A quick glance over at lineman 1-on-1 drills and Ali'i Robins looks to have gained a considerable amount of strength in the off season. After Isaac Seumalo had his way with defenders the day before, Robins stood the big freshman up and held his ground. Not much has been reported on Robins, but holding his own while giving up 26 pounds is promising and could be more added depth at the d-tackle spot.
