Portland lineman excited at Wyoming offer
Portland (Ore.) offensive tackle Andrew Kirkland is about to put some serious miles on the family car as he attempts to find a place to play his college football. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Jesuit High School standout has five visits planned, with more on the way.
Kirkland will be at Oregon State's Junior Day on April 7, in Boise for their Junior Day on April 14 and will also visit Washington, Cal and Oregon. While Pac-12 schools have invited him on-campus, It is a Mountain West team - Wyoming that has been his largest scholarship offer to date.
"I received a call telling me to call (UW offensive line coach Pete Kaligis) and he offered me," Kirkland said. "I was really excited. It was hard to contain myself on the outside. I was just on a really good mood. One of my other friends - defensive tackle Matt Soulmer - was about 10 feet away from me and he got an offer too. It was pretty cool."
Wyoming and Portland State are the only schools to have offered Kirland thus far and he said he plans to set up a visit to Laramie with his parents for the off-season.
"I'm really open to all the schools that are talking to me and I am looking forward to the next football season," Kirkland said. "I know Wyoming is located in a good part of the country and they have great academics."
Kirkland said he is planning a career in either law enforcement or the practice of law and said strong classroom reputations will be a part of his decision on a college.
"In a perfect world I would like good academics, a good coach who is kind of like a friend to you, high-energy, good community and just an overall sense of home," He said. "Distance isn't a problem - I am good where ever."
On the field, Kirkland said he is known as a strong run blocker thanks to powerful legs that have him squatting 500 pounds. He also bench presses 320.
"Most of the folks I am hearing from they tell me I have very good feet, strong legs, powerful and a nastiness to the position and I am smart kid," he said. "I think I have really good explosiveness, I am quick, I have long arms and I like to punch people with those. I am good with run blocking and am really good with my feet at getting off blocks and getting out to linebackers."
