Brice finally gets SEC offer

Kentrell Brice took several trips to Oxford, Miss., over the spring and summer, hoping for an offer from Ole Miss.

That offer never came. Brice eventually gave up, committing first to Missouri and then to Louisiana Tech, losing track of the Rebels in the process.

On Saturday, however, Brice got the phone call he'd been waiting on, though it came from an unexpected yet familiar person.

Dave Wommack was on other end of the call, offering the 6-foot-1, 178-pound cornerback a scholarship. Wommack had been in touch with Brice weekly, recruiting him _ in vain _ to Arkansas State. Wommack became Ole Miss' defensive coordinator a week ago, however, and his offer to the Ruston, La., defensive back to join him in the Southeastern Conference was a potential game-changer.

"Coach Wommack called and said they liked my film at Arkansas State, but they didn't think I'd go there," Brice said. "He said he knew I wanted to play in the SEC, so they were offering me for Ole Miss.

"These coaches seem to like me. I like that. It would be a great chance for me to play. I just have to come in there and compete."

Brice visited Ole Miss on numerous occasions during this past spring and summer, never picking up the offer he yearned for.

"It was kind of disappointing, but you have to move on," said Brice, who committed to Louisiana Tech in the fall and said Sunday he's still committed to the Bulldogs, though his "options are kind of open. I'm looking for a home."

Getting the offer from the Rebels, Brice said, is a potential game-changer.

"I really don't know. I'm looking for playing time, but the SEC offers a better chance to get to next level," Brice said. "It's the best competition in the United States. It's going to be a tough decision.

Brice helped lead Ruston to the third round of the Class 5A playoffs as a senior. He's on pace to qualify academically, as well. Brice said he's scheduled to visit Missouri this weekend, though he's not sure the trip to Columbia will take place. He's scheduled to visit Louisiana Tech officially on Jan. 6. Ole Miss is talking to him about a visit to Oxford later in January.

"I'm open to any school," Brice said. "It's just about atmosphere, environment and a better chance at playing time for me."
