Freitag talks commitment to Alabama
Buford, Ga., tight end Kurt Freitag committed to the University of Alabama on Monday night, becoming the 21st commitment in the Crimson Tide's 2012 recruiting class. TideSports.com caught up with the Rivals.com three-star to see why he picked Alabama and how his senior year is going.
Q: Why Alabama? Why was that a good fit for you?
A: The coaching staff is made up of a bunch of great guys. I can't say enough about Coach Saban. He's a great coach. He cares about his players on and off the field. Alabama really focuses on developing good men, players on and off the field.
They have really good networks for after you graduate. The facilities are top-notch. All of the players seem to be real good guys from what I've seen. They have a great atmosphere, probably some of the best fans in the country.
They have got great tradition there, kind of like the school I'm coming from, so it just seemed like a good transition and a good fit for me.
Q: Your teammate Dillon Lee is also coming to Alabama. Did that factor in at all to your decision?
A: Honestly, not really because I knew when I was going to make my decision, it would be a strictly business decision and what's best for me. It ended up being Alabama, and that was the same for him, so that worked out well. I'm real excited to play with him for another four years.
First, I didn't really want that to be a factor of whether or not I went there, but it worked out like that, so that's pretty exciting. That doesn't really happen a lot.
Q: Alabama likes to use their tight end in both the running game and passing game. How do they want to use you?
A: They have the Y and the H. The Y is more of a run-blocking tight end, and the H is more of like a shifty guy who can run and catch. The coaches told me I could pretty much do both, so we'll see once I get there what they think.
I've gotten used to blocking for my team now because we run the ball very heavily, so I'm used to blocking for running backs.
Q: I know it came down to Alabama and Florida. How long have you known Alabama was your choice?
A: I've probably known for a couple weeks. About a month ago, I got the feeling that Alabama was really the best place for me. For awhile, it was Alabama and Florida, and it kind of changed who was my No. 1 team, but now I just know for a fact that it's the right place for me.
Q: Why did you go ahead and make your decision today?
A: I get asked all the time (where I'm going). I've probably been asked about it a thousand times, so I kind of wanted to get it out of the way, and I thought the Monday of the state championship would be a good time. It's a big week, and I just wanted to let everybody know today.
Q: How's your senior year at Buford been so far?
A: We've done great. With our senior class, everyone is just best friends. We all have fun at practice everyday. We have a small school, so we have almost every class together, we see each other in the halls. We've really played well as a senior class.
I think we range in one of the top three teams that Buford has ever had, so that says a lot about it. It's just a great group of guys, and it's been a great year.
Q: How excited are you to play in Friday's state title game?
A: I'm real excited. It's going to be our last game as seniors, so we're going to leave it all out on the field. I'm real excited to play. A lot of people are going to come out and watch our team.
