Kozan narrowing his list

Ohio State's search for offensive tackles in the 2012 class continues and one of the prospects on the Buckeyes' board is Castle Rock (Colo.) Valor Christian product Alex Kozan. The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder is rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com. Kozan has kept in regular contact with Ohio State offensive line coach Jim Bollman over the last several weeks and could be closing in on an offer.

"I talk to coach (Jim) Bollman every week but they still haven't offered me," said Kozan. "They said they would let me know last week but because of Big Ten media day and all of that they really didn't have a chance. I'm hoping to get an answer by the end of this week just to see if it's a realistic possibility, just so if it's not I can move on. I hope (an offer) does happen but I'm not sure right now if it will or not."

As Kozan waits to get the verdict from the Ohio State staff, he is preparing to narrow his list down in the very near future.

"I'm trying to get to a top seven by the end of the week," said Kozan. "I have a pretty good idea right now (of who the teams will be) but I want to make sure I tell the coaches that didn't make it and just be respectful to them and make sure I tell them first before I tell anyone else."

So where would the Buckeyes sit if they were to extend an offer?

"If they do (offer) they would be in there," he said. "If not, schools are going to come in at the later stages of the game and they might have better opportunities so I'll have to make that decision when it happens. The main purpose in making my top seven is to narrow it down so that the other schools that have offered me, I can cut them loose so they can focus on other guys and so I can be fair to them. If (new) schools come in, I'll evaluate them then so the top seven will only be schools that have offered me."

Kozan's plan all along has been to make an October decision and the big tackle prospect is still on track to do that as once he narrows his list to seven, he can start focusing on his official visits.

"My goal is to get from my top seven to deciding where I'll take my official visits," Kozan explained. "I'm probably going to take at least three (official visits). I don't know if I'll take all five but I'll take at least three so I can see some campuses and see some places I haven't seen before. Hopefully by the end of October, before the playoffs, I can make a final decision."

As of now, just one school is guaranteed an official visit from Kozan and they reside in the Big Ten conference.

"I've scheduled one visit so far," he said. "I scheduled Iowa over the weekend of September 25th when the play Louisiana-Monroe.

Kozan says his decision to visit Iowa in September revolved around his relationship that he has developed with coaching staff as well as the academic reputation at Iowa.

"They have a great education," he explained. "I'm looking at studying business. The business school is one of the top business schools. Athletically, I get along with the coaching staff well. The coaches have been at Iowa for a while now and there's stability there. The strength and conditioning program is top notch and overall they have produced O-linemen. They have the most O-linemen that have been drafted over any college the past 10 years. They've also been able to compete and they've been a top 10 team a couple of times the last decade so, overall, Iowa is a good fit for me."
