G.L. Gridiron: Ross, St. Mary's make statement with win
DETROIT - Cass Tech continues to roll through the Detroit Public School League. The Technicians are coming off big wins over rivals Detroit Southeastern and Detroit Martin Luther King in back-to-back weeks and now hold a two-game lead in D-1 of the PSL heading into this week's game against Mumford.
Cass Tech handed MLK their first loss of the season and bottled up dynamic junior Dennis Norfleet in the process. Cass Tech has outscored PSL D-1 opponents 122-0 after defeating the state-ranked Crusaders 25-0.
Juniors Terry Richardson and Royce Jenkins-Stone had big games for the Technicians.
"Today wasn't our day," said Norfleet. "We learn from our mistakes as we go. We are team, so when we lose, we all lose."
Norfleet said that mental mistakes were downfall for he and his teammates in the game. The 2012 standout hopes MLK and Cass Tech will get a chance to play each other again in the PSL playoffs.
MLK will face Detroit Southeastern this weekend in showdown between Norfleet and 2011 Spartan linebacker commitment Ed Davis. Like MLK, Southeastern's lone loss of the season came at the hands of Cass Tech.
The Jungaleers enter the game fresh off a 53-0 win over Detroit Denby.
Great Lakes Gridiron also dropped in on an impressive blowout win for Orchard Lake St. Mary's over Columbus (Ohio) powerhouse St. Francis deSales.
The powerhouse from Ohio is in a bit of a transition year after graduating 25 seniors from last year's team, including a Ohio Defensive Player of the Year and the third-place vote getter in Mr. Football balloting, Travis Jackson, who is red shirting during his freshman year at Michigan State.
Columbus deSales still has a number of talented players including Michigan commitment Chris Rock and quarterback Nick Gentile, who started for the Stallions during their run to the state finals.
GLG caught up with junior linebacker James Ross after the signature win for the Eaglets.
