TU hosts upset-minded Bears
Attempting to heal its wounds from last week's loss at Oklahoma State, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-2) will host the Central Arkansas Bears (3-0) of the Football Championship Subdivision this evening. UCA is a familiar foe, as they were also TU's fourth opponent two years ago, scoring on their first four possessions to give the home team a scare.
"The coaches are the same, but it's two different teams than from 2008," UCA coach Clint Conque told the Log Cabin Democrat. "There are only about six players on either side who played in that game."
UCA was only down 28-20 against Tulsa at halftime in 2008. The TU defense finally tightened up after halftime, but still allowed Bears quarterback Nathan Brown to complete 24 of 33 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Tulsa eventually won 62-34.
UCA is now guided by another Nathan at QB. Nathan Dick started two games for the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2008 before transferring to Central Arkansas. So far this season, Dick has completed 67-of-98 passes for 728 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception.
Dick was offered a scholarship by Tulsa and head coach Steve Kragthorpe in 2006, but the Allen (TX) gunslinger committed to Rice and Todd Graham. However, Dick de-committed from Rice when Graham left for Tulsa, and he then picked up a late offer from Arkansas and signed with the Razorbacks in the class of 2007.
"He was committed to Rice when I took the head coaching job (at Tulsa)," said Graham. "When I moved here, he de-committed and committed to Arkansas. I've known his dad and brother for a long time. His parents are great people.
