Moats talks Iowa visit

Shelby Moats has seen his recruiting stock soar during the July period thanks to his strong play early in the evaluation period. The 6-foot-8 and 225 forward from Waconia, MN recently picked up an offer from the Hawkeyes and stopped by the Iowa campus to get to know more about the new coaching staff and tour the campus. He talks in-depth about the visit in this Q & A.

Q: How was the visit to Iowa?

MOATS: It was a really good visit. I liked all the coaches. Coach McCaffery wasn't there because he was on vacation, but the rest of his staff was there. They were really open and it was a good time.

Q: What did you think about picking up the Iowa offer? What are your thoughts after the visit?

MOATS: As far as the offer, they came and saw me in Minnesota at an event. Honestly, I didn't think I played great there, but they still liked me which was nice. After the visit it just made me appreciate Iowa more. After being on campus again and seeing more of the campus, I like it even more. It is definitely an option I am going to look at even more moving forward.

Q: Did they talk to you about setting up an official visit this fall?

MOATS: Yes they did. We didn't set a date yet, but they asked me if I will be coming down for an official this fall.

Q: Are you planning on making an official visit?

MOATS: There is a good chance. I wouldn't say it is set in stone, but the odds are pretty good.

Q: Walk me through the visit. What did you see that you liked?

MOATS: We arrived at the arena and met all three assistant coaches outside. They took us into the basketball office and we talked for a while. Then they gave us a tour of the campus and took me to the business center because I told them that I might have an interest in business as a major. Then they took me to the learning center and met some people there. I was really impressed with the arena. I like the way that is it set up for a shooter. I also like that they have a new practice facility that is being built that would be completed by the time I would get there next year.

Q: You were at Iowa's Elite Camp last year and got to shoot there. Does that help Iowa at all that you liked shooting there?

MOATS: Yeah, I liked it last year too, but I just didn't know what their interest level was. Now with the new coaching staff they are recruiting me and have offered.

Q: You have kind of blown up a bit this summer with more offers. What has that been like?

MOATS: It has been good, but it is also added some pressure to make the right decision. It has been fun to hear from schools and who might be interest. I have some great schools to choose from.

Q: You also visited Creighton recently. What was that like?

MOATS: It was a good visit. The Qwest Center was amazing and the coaching staff was very nice. Coach Mac wasn't there, so that made it different because he was on vacation.
