Hokies get visit, offer 2012 stud

Virginia Tech had a huge visitor on campus over the weekend. The 2012 prospect made his first visit to Blacksburg on Saturday for the Hokies Maroon White Spring Game. Since, the target has picked up a number of offers this week.

"I'm definitely interested in Virginia Tech," Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek 2012 offensive tackle D.J. Humphries said following his visit to Tech. "They have nice facilities and I like the direction the program is going in. I like the players and I talked to some of them. I also got to talk to the head coach (Frank Beamer) and the offensive coordinator."

Humphries was impressed by the game at Tech.

"The atmosphere was crazy, I couldn't imagine that," he said. "They played the Sandman song and everybody is jumping. Coming out of the tunnel, that was crazy.

"I loved it. It was a very good experience for me."

Heading into the week, Humphries held two scholarships from Clemson and South Carolina. Now the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder sits at six including one from Virginia Tech, which he pulled on Thursday.

"Man, I've had a great week, it's coming at me so fast," he stated. "I'm very surprised by all the offers. I knew some schools knew about me, but I didn't know all the other college coaches across the country knew like Notre Dame and Georgia."

On Tuesday, NC State pulled the trigger followed by Notre Dame on Wednesday and Virginia Tech along with Georgia on Thursday. Humphries discussed each of his latest scholarships.

Notre Dame: "I think that they are a great school and with their new coach and their program, they are going to be on the up rise."

Georgia: "I love Georgia. I've been down in that area before. I actually moved from Georgia to Charlotte. I lived in Atlanta for about four years. I was living with my dad. I definitely love Georgia and love the atmosphere, especially those Saturday night games."

NC State: "I really like State. The coaches seem pretty passionate about how I play and think highly of me as a person and player. It's great to be able to stay close to home."

Virginia Tech: "I'm really excited about that offer. I've always liked them since I was a kid when Michael Vick and Marcus Vick came through. I still do like them. It's definitely a great look and I know they are running low on linemen, so I could fall right into place there."

Of the latest offers, a couple have caught Humphries eye.

"Right now the ones that stick out the most for me are Virginia Tech and Georgia," he said. "For one, Georgia is in the SEC and a big school in the SEC. When I was coming up I always wanted to play SEC football and it's a higher intensity level.

"For Virginia Tech, it's just that so many great athletes have come through there. I want to be apart of that."

Humphries confirmed he is contemplating a visit to Georgia this weekend.

Clearly colleges are impressed with the lineman, what sticks out about him as a player?

"I think what sticks out about me is my size and athletic ability," he said. "Everyone who meets me says I'm a nice person, but once I put my finger in the dirt there is a different side to me."
