Ole Miss visit re-scheduled for Tennessee commits
The coming weekend is now much less busy for a couple of Tennessee commitments.
Both four-star athlete Delvin Jones and three-star linebacker Ralph Williams are soft verbal commits to the Volunteers, but the pair was contemplating a visit to Oxford, Miss., this weekend to check out Ole Miss.
However, at the urging of the Rebel coaches, that trip has now been delayed.
"(Recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks) Coach (Chris) Vaughn came by my school, and he's wanting me to visit in January instead of Friday," said Williams, who finished his prep career at Southridge in Miami. Prior to this season, Williams attended Gulliver Prep with former Ole Miss signees Artice Kellam and Frank Crawford.
Jones was on the same page regarding his plans.
"It's not this weekend," said Jones, a Rivals250 standout from Miami Palmetto. "I don't have my calendar in front of me, but it's next month I'm going to head up there."
Also involved in the date switch is Ole Miss commitment Jeff Scott. Scott, a three-star running back from Miami's Archbishop Carroll, is friends with both Jones and Williams.
Lakeland Fla., linebacker Quayshawn Nealy is another Ole Miss target that was scheduled to visit this weekend, but the three-star prospect committed to Georgia Tech Tuesday.
Williams, 6-foot-1, 223, pledged to Tennessee in May but claimed the Vols and Rebels were even when Ole Miss offered this fall. But even with the offer, Williams is in a holding pattern with Ole Miss due to a shortage of scholarships. The Rebels lost three scholarships for this signing class due to a penalty implemented because of Ole Miss' low academic progress rate.
"They said they were holding back offers and can't take another linebacker right now because of the probation or whatever," Williams said. "Coach Vaughn said they are going to appeal it and hopefully they'll have a spot for me.
"I'm going to take my visits in January and then make a decision when I see what the situation is."
Jones is actively looking at Ole Miss, Arkansas and Wake Forest, in addition to Tennessee. The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder has an official visit planned to Tennessee the weekend of January 15 but isn't sure of the other dates.
"Ole Miss keeps telling me they're interested, and I'm keeping them in mind and wanting to check it out," Jones said. "I'll wait until Signing Day to firm up my decision. I've got some visits, and Jeff, Ralph and I are going to visit Ole Miss whatever weekend that is.
"I've got a great relationship with Coach Vaughn."
Williams has an SAT score of 890 and a 2.6 GPA. Those totals project him as a full qualifier. Jones took his ACT for the first time in November, and his GPA is above the required number.
