Series by series: UW's defense against Indiana
One week before Wisconsin played Indiana, it shut out Purdue and held the Boilermakers to under 100 yards in each of the rushing and passing categories. On Saturday against the Hoosiers, UW did not play quite as well. By the end of the win, the Badgers had given up 386 total yards, 323 of which came through the air.
Before moving forward to Michigan, BadgerBlitz.com takes a look back at every defensive series. The following is a series-by-series recap of Saturday's defensive performance.
Defensive series No. 1: Started on IU 34 yard line following 41-yard Brad Nortman punt.
Yards given up: 17
Result: David Gilreath muffed fumble recovered by Indiana.
Key play: Gilreath was trying to return the punt while looking into a very bright sun in the cloudless Indiana sky. Apparently, he lost sight of it and the ball hit him on the helmet and fell into the hands of Collin Taylor.
Defensive series No. 2: Started on UW 10 yard line following muffed punt.
Yards given up: 10
Result: Ben Chappell 11-yard touchdown pass to Tandon Doss. (7-0 Indiana)
Key play: Chappell fired to the far corner and connected with Doss for an easy 11-yard score.
Defensive series No. 3: Started on IU 23 yard line following kickoff. (7-7)
Yards given up: 9
Result: 42-yard Chris Hagerup punt.
Key play: UW freshman Chris Borland stuffed Darius Willis one-yard shy of the first down marker. It looked like Willis would have an opportunity to pick up the first down, but he spun inside where Borland met him and dropped him.
Defensive series No. 4: Started on IU 49 yard line following kickoff. (10-7 Wisconsin)
Yards given up: 13
Result: Chris Maragos interception.
Key play:. Indiana had just picked up a third and one when Chappell snuck up the middle for four yards. However, on the ensuing first down play, Chappell tried to stroke one in the gap of the zone, but Maragos made a play on it and intercepted the pass.
Defensive series No. 5: Started on IU seven yard line following kickoff. (17-7 Wisconsin)
Yards given up: 6
Result: 34-yard Hagerup punt.
Key play: O'Brien Schofield has been one of the nations best at bringing players down in the backfield this season. On second and one, he burst through the line and brought Willis down for a three-yard loss.
Defensive series No. 6: Started on IU 20 yard line following 45-yard Nortman punt.
Yards given up: 80
Result: 46-yard Tandon Doss touchdown reception. (17-14 Wisconsin)
Key play: The pass defense floodgates opened for the Badgers during this drive. It only took Indiana, who was struggling to move the ball, three plays to score from 80 yards out. Chappell hit Turner for 33 yards, Mitchell Evans for one-yard and Doss for the remaining 46 and a touchdown.
Defensive series No. 7: Started on IU 20 following kickoff. (24-14 Wisconsin)
Yards given up: 15
Result: End of Half
Key play: Indiana head coach Bill Lynch called a timeout with just over 30 seconds left in the half, but following it, the Hoosiers ran a draw and let the clock run out.
Defensive series No. 8: Started on IU 26 yard line following kickoff.
Yards given up: 58
Result: Borland interception.
Key play: Indiana was well inside the red zone when Schofield deflected the Chappell pass and caused it to float. Borland, who was in coverage, was able to overcome a stumble and make the diving catch.
Defensive series No. 9: Started on IU 35 yard line following 45-yard Nortman punt.
Yards given up: 8
Result: 36-yard Hagerup punt.
Key play: Utility linebacker Blake Sorensen brought Mitchell Evans down for a one-yard gain on second and 10. IU was backed up even further when Rodger Saffold was flagged for a illegal block in the back on the same play.
Defensive series No. 10: Started on IU 19 yard line following 46-yard Nortman punt.
Yards given up: 81
Result: Six-yard Turner touchdown reception. (24-21 Wisconsin)
Key play: The Badgers had IU out of field goal range and facing a fourth and five. However, that didn't stop Chappell from connecting with Demarlo Belcher for a big 30-yard reception and first down. The Hoosiers would score three plays later.
Defensive series No. 11: Started on IU 20 yard line following kickoff. (31-21 Wisconsin)
Yards given up: 80
Result: Two-yard Trea Burgess touchdown run. (31-28 Wisconsin)
Key play: On back-to-back plays, Chappell found receivers for 20 and 21 yards respectively. As a result, the Hoosiers were able to move the ball at will and eventually set up the Burgess touchdown run.
