Tillery keeping good spirits through injury
Last Friday night was a tough one for Starkville wide receiver Chuck Tillery.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior watched helplessly from the sidelines on crutches as his teammates suffered a 30-0 loss to Noxubee County. Tillery suffered a fractured fibula one week prior to the game causing him to miss the first game of his life in any sport.
"I wanted to be there to encourage them but at the same time I wanted to be on the field," Tillery said. "That was the first game I have ever had to miss from pee wee on up. That was the first game I have ever missed in any sport."
Tillery hurt is leg while practicing but did not seemed all that concerned about it initially.
"I caught a ball in practice and made a guy miss," Tillery said. "Then I ended up coming back towards him and he hit me in my foot and it rolled. I thought it was a sprain because I could get back up and walk on it. Later on after I got home it started hurting and I couldn't walk on it so I told my parents to take me to the emergency room and the doctor told me that it was broken but not completely broken so it was a fracture."
Tillery underwent successful surgery last Tuesday as is expected to miss four weeks. He is set to be in a walking boot Monday and can begin his rehab the following week.
