Mullen talking Auburn

The last two years Mississippi State has come up one play short against Auburn and suffered losses in each of those contests.

The 2011 defeat was possibly the most difficult to take. The Tigers made a goal line stand to stuff MSU quarterback Chris Relf on the goal line as time expired to walk away with a 41-34 victory.

That loss to Auburn in week two tempered some of the preseason expectations many had for the Bulldogs which started a steak of four straight losses to begin conference play last fall.

"That was a tough loss last year at their place," said MSU head coach Dan Mullen "Not just because of the game, but just the fact you lost the game is such a tough loss because it is. You try to put pressure. We're here to try to win the SEC West and part of that, the aspects to do that, is to win your home games and really win that conference opener to start you off on the right foot."

This week will be another opportunity for Mullen and his Bulldogs to jumpstart their efforts inside the conference. State will host Auburn at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

"We're really excited, obviously, about this game this week," Mullen said. "I think we've had a couple good days of practice and I know our guys know how important it is to win that first conference game. If you want to make a run to win the conference championship, I think the first game is an absolutely critical part of that because right now in week two of the season you're two games ahead because you own the tiebreaker or two games behind with one of your other teams on your side of the conference.
