INDIANAPOLIS - There was little question who the top performer was at Monday's Best of the Midwest combine in Indianapolis. Fort Wayne (Ind.) Bishop Luers linebacker Jaylon Smith stole the show with some of the top numbers in the testing events and a dazzling performance in 1-on-1's and 7-on-7 action.
Physically, Smith is up in the 215-220 pound range but will be able to easily add 15-20 more pounds of good weight. Smith has broad shoulders and an enormous wing span and was arguably the most physically impressive prospect at an event that showcased nearly 300 prospects.
In 1on1's, Smith worked out with the defensive ends and turned in the best effort of the group. Smith has a lightning quick first step and his quickness was simply too much for the opposing offensive linemen. The most impressive part of Smith's performance in 1on1's was that he wasn't simply using his speed to run around linemen, he was beating guys inside with ease.
In the 7on7's Smith made arguably the most impressive play with an outstanding interception where he was running to his left and reached up and snagged the ball out above his back shoulder. Smith showed outstanding cover skills and his long arms really disrupt the passing lanes. His ability to turn and run with receivers as well as patrol the middle of the field was on full display.
Overall, Smith was clearly the top performer on Monday and showed everyone why he is one of the nation's elite prospects.
