Shumpert seeks opportunities in the spread

When William Shumpert committed to Mississippi State Sylvester Croom was the head coach and was running a west coast offense where the fullback was heavily involved.

But when the move was made to bring Dan Mullen on board with his spread style offense, Shumpert decided to remain true to his work and keep his pledge to the Bulldogs.

"This offense is a whole lot different," Shumpert said. "In this offense the fullbacks don't get a whole lot of plays but with the little plays that we do get in, we've got to do well."

Part of Shumpert's decision to stay committed was his lifelong love for MSU. He also had scholarship offers from Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech.

"Mississippi State was the right choice for me," Shumpert said. "It's been my favorite school since I was little. It's a dream come true. I didn't think I'd ever get a scholarship to a Division-I school. It's just a blessing."

The six-foot, 240-pounder spent his first year in Starkville redshirting which he admits was the right move by the coaching staff.
