Bulldogs post win in final exhibition

STARKVILLE, Miss., - Mississippi State got one final tune up before it's 2009-10 season opener Friday against Rider.

The 18th ranked Bulldogs hosted Georgetown College for their final exhibition challenge winning with a convincing 90-70 victory sparked by a strong first half start.

MSU jumped out to a 41-22 lead in the first half sparked by a 22-5 run before halftime.

"It was two different games for us," said MSU head coach Rick Stansbury. "At halftime I was very pleased. I thought we accomplished some things that we wanted to accomplish. We only gave up 22 points in the first half and scored 41. We rebounded the basketball and it was 24-13 at halftime on the boards. Our effort the second half was not near as good. They kept coming at us. We have to learn that you cannot play the score and cannot play the opponent. When we had to turn it up we turned it up. You can't get in the habit of turning it on and turning it off. "

The Bulldogs shot 56.6-percent from the field but made only 5-of-19 from behind the 3-point line including Barry Stewart 0-for-7 afternoon behind the arc. Mississippi State converted 25 of their 30 attempts from the free throw line.

Jarvis Varnado led the way for State scoring 17 points while adding nine rebounds and five blocks. Varnado was perfect from the floor making all seven shot attempts.

"I think we got better today," Varnado said. "We had a relapse in the second half, but we came out of it OK. I think this team is ready to do well in the opener. "
