January 13, 2009In the past two seasons, Georgetown hasn't had much reason to fear Notre Dame forward Luke Harangody.
Harangody bullied other teams in the Big East but never the Hoyas. In three games against Georgetown, Harangody fouled out twice and never scored more than 13 points. Entering this season, Harangody averaged 9.6 points against the Hoyas, his lowest average against any Big East team.
But on Jan. 5, Harangody treated Georgetown just like any other team. Harangody, despite playing with four fouls for much of the second half, scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 73-67 win over the Hoyas. By adding 30 points and 16 rebounds in an 88-79 win Saturday over Seton Hall, Harangody earned Rivals.com National Player of the Week honors.
"He's the MVP of our league," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "He makes good decisions. He can score from many places on the court, and they surround him with guys who can make shots."
California guard Patrick Christopher scored 27 points and added 11 rebounds Saturday in an 88-85 win at Washington in triple overtime. He scored 22 points in a 57-50 win at Washington State on Thursday.
Washington forward Jon Brockman scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in an 84-83 win over Stanford on Thursday before scoring 19 points and adding 18 boards in an 88-85 triple-overtime loss to Cal on Saturday.
NON-BIG SIX PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jeremy Lin, Harvard
Leave it to Harvard to understand the psychological impact of a letdown game. Three days after Boston College upset undefeated North Carolina, Harvard defeated the Eagles 82-70. Lin sparked the upset with 27 points, eight assists, six steals and three rebounds.
Lin also helped Harvard to a 63-62 Ivy League win over Dartmouth on Saturday with 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Gonzaga guard Matt Bouldin had 26 points, five assists and four rebounds in an 89-79 overtime win at Tennessee on Wednesday. He also had 14 points, six assists and two rebounds in a 67-50 win over Portland on Saturday.
In his only game of the week, St. Joseph's forward Ahmad Nivins had 28 points and 20 rebounds in a 92-86 triple-overtime win over Rhode Island on Saturday.
Guard Reggie Holmes scored 25 points and added eight rebounds in Morgan State's first win in school history over Maryland. The Baltimore school beat the Terrapins 66-65 on Wednesday. Holmes also had 26 points and seven rebounds in a 73-62 win over North Carolina A&T on Saturday.
After Georgetown hit a two-game slide in the Big East, Monroe helped the Hoyas rebound to defeat Providence.
Monroe had 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in Saturday's 82-75 win over the Friars, who had started 3-0 in Big East play. In a 73-67 loss to Notre Dame on Jan. 5, Monroe held his own with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
