April 7, 2008Meridian, Miss. is known for producing great players. It's proximity to Starkville has long benefited the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Once again the Bulldogs strike gold at Meridian as wide receiver Chris Smith gave Sylvester Croom and the Bulldogs his commitment.
"Yes sir, I committed to Mississippi State this weekend," Smith said in his coaches office on Monday. "I felt it was the best place for me. I fit in real well there, it's close to home and I really believe in the program and what they are doing. I am really happy with my decision and I feel like I made the best decision for myself."
The 6-foot-2, 193-pound Smith caught 54 passes for 876 yards and seven touchdowns.
"I had been there and I like how I fit," Smith said. "The coaches there reminded me of my coaches and I really like my coaches a lot. When Tyler committed that really boosted them up. I am going to be his big target, we are going to ball together. That made me want to be a Bulldog. I am really excited to be able to get to keep playing with him and have him as my future quarterback."
Smith's only offer was Mississippi State, but he was getting interest from plenty of other programs when he committed to the Bulldogs.
"I had been thinking about it for a while," Smith said. "When I went up there for a junior day I really felt a connection to them. I had talked to coach Stringer about it and he was real excited when I committed."
Smith believes the future of the Bulldog program is bright.
"I think we are putting together a great class," Smith said. "Whenever I am there from now on I am going to be talking to other recruits trying to get them to come to Mississippi State. We are going to do great things."
