June 5, 2005As reported just Friday of last week, MSU went into the recruiting season looking for beef on both sides of the ball and captured a commitment from a defensive from Texas, thus getting the ball rolling on one side of the ball. Not to upset the balance, the staff decided to reach into the same Texas high school and add another commitment, this time from a player on the offensive side of the ball. How big is he and what position will he play?
"I committed to Mississippi State, commented Fort Bend Marshall athlete Chris Herrera. "Right now I am being recruited at tight end and tackle."
Herrera stands 6-foot-4, weighs 255 pounds, runs the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds, and has a 30-inch vertical leap (measured at the University of Houston). He will play both tight end and tackle, depending on the situation, this year.
"Coach Croom is a good man," Herrera continued. "My dad talked to coach Croom and he is learning a lot about coach Croom and he likes the way coach Croom coaches. It's basically coach Croom that got me committed to Mississippi State, because if he wasn't there I probably wouldn't have committed."
Herrera originally committed to the University of Houston, but that was before MSU assistant coach Brick Haley and company stepped foot on the Thurgood Marshall campus.
"I liked coach Croom and he said they run a lot of pro sets so I could get in a lot," Herrera explained. "I have family in Arkansas and they have cousins and relatives in Mississippi so I have some family around. I also have a brother, Jazton Heard and right now he may end up at Jackson State."
Fort Bend Marshall teammate Brandon Cooper committed to MSU last week, and while a surprise, Herrera likes his new scenario.
"I didn't know Brandon had committed until after I did," he explained. "That'll be good though. I will have somebody there I know."
Herrera chose the Bulldogs over offers from Houston, Iowa, Iowa State, and several others. He plans to camp at UTEP and Texas State this summer.
Herrera has a 2.8 GPA and is scheduled to take the ACT Saturday. He wants to major in computer technology.
"At our school right now I am in the GIS program and the graphical systems we do, we go out and look at maps and lay out designs and stuff," he said.
