Carrollwood (Fla.) Day School running back Robert Davis felt the offer was coming, he just didn't think it would take so long.
Other schools in the Big East and from around the country were offering as well. That's where Davis is this weekend - visiting Cincinnati - a school that Davis committed to - then changed his mind after the departure of Butch Jones to Tennessee
So new Bearcat coach Tommy Tuberville wasted little time in getting on the phone with Davis, and scheduling an official visit.
"I saw him (Tommy Tuberville)at the AFCA and talked to him twice," said Lane McLaughlin, Carrollwood Day School head coach. "He was really excited to see Robert in Cincinnati and is coming down here next week."
"The previous staff (at USF) had not offered, but coach (Willie) Taggart came in and offered him," said McLaughlin. "He knew he'd probably get an offer from them and it came as soon as Taggart took over."
"The other three are USF, Boston College or UMass," McLaughlin said. "He's scheduled to go to Boston College, but I don't know if he's going to take that trip or not. He may likely take an official to USF that weekend."
The chance to play in front of the hometown crowd is appealing to Davis.
"I think they've got a shot for sure," said McLaughlin. "He wants to play at home, I know that."
So what makes Davis so popular? McLaughlin calls it the 'second-step speed.'
"He's really fast and his balance is incredible. He cuts on a dime. He's at full speed and the second and third step, he's taking off," McLaughlin said. "He's a road runner. They call him RD5."
Davis is a Two-time All State first team selection and Hillsborough County's single-season and all-time leading rusher.
"They won't even kick to him anymore. He averaged 85 yards on a kickoff return. You have to change your game when you play him. He's looking for the cutback. He's very good at that." Davis had 203 carries for 2,221 yards his senior year, and scored 26 rushing touchdowns.
Now that the offer has officially been extended, let's see if Robert Davis takes that official.
