Joel Poe, senior quarterback from Spanish Fort High School in Ala., may not be on everyone's recruiting list. Head coach Mark Freeman knows a lot of coaches are missing out on his signal caller.

Freeman knows he has a winner. A player who is smart on-and-off the field and who delivered Spanish Fort their second ever state championship in Class 5A.

Poe earned MVP honors Thursday night in a 45-14 win against previously undefeated McAdory High School. He completed 17-of-24 for 177 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown. He was 212-of-311 for 3,226 yards with 39 touchdowns and 12 interceptions prior to the state title game.

"We really never know what a defense is going to give us," said Poe. "We had opportunities to pass and were able to take advantage of it tonight. I was just going through my reads. Whoever was open I was just trying to get the ball to them.

"It means a lot to win this game. It means a lot to this program with all the seniors. You see after the 2010 win with guys like Reese [Dismukes], Blake [Dees] and Ameriol [Finley] leaving we had a lot of slack to pick up. It took us a year, and we all had the same feeling. Our coaches did a great job."

The 6-foot, 205-pound prospect doesn't have much college interest at this point. Coaches may start taking a second look after his senior season and also a 30 on his ACT.

"I was invited to Mississippi State for the Arkansas game," he said. "La Tech has come talked to me a few times. None of them are serious. Hopefully something comes up.

"I am not the biggest or the fastest. I feel like my intelligence, knowing the game, studying defenses and film are my strengths. I make the throws I have to make and make plays I have to make."
