October 10, 2012El Cerrito (Calif.) cornerback Marcellus Pippins ended his recruitment on Wednesday with a surprise commitment to Utah.
Pippins, who made an official visit to Salt Lake City last week, had originally planned on waiting to make a final decision. However, after thinking it over, the speedy cornerback decided that there was no need to wait. "When I went down there [at Utah], I got a good vibe from it. It's a great place to be. They were my first offer. It just felt like it was a good fit for me,' Pippins said.
Pippins is one of Utah's top cornerback targets, and should fit in well with Utah's aggressive defense that relies heavily on leaving corners in man-to-man coverage. "I think I'm going to fit in real well with Utah's defense. They play a style of defense that I really like. When I went out there, their corners were doing good. They seemed so into it, wanting to play D, flying to ball. I've been around that style of football all my life. It's what I like to see," he said.
Pippins, who is also a standout basketball player, hopes to try his hand at playing for the Utah basketball team as well once his football responsibilities are taken care of. "I did talk to the coaches [about playing basketball]. [Coach Whittingham] said he doesn't mind, so I'm going to go try out for the basketball team and do the same thing for them," he said.
Despite his early commitment, Pippins still plans on taking one or two visits to make sure he made the right choice. The most likely destinations will be Washington State and UCLA. "I'm still going to take other visits, but right now I feel like Utah is the place," he said.
