Heads turned nationwide in the recruiting world today when Fort Myers, Fla., standout Joe Fennell announced his commitment to Western Kentucky.
But for the No. 18 rated offensive guard in the country, WKU was the "perfect" fit.
"The coaching staff is great there," Fennell said. "They've got a pretty good program, and a lot of people are there from my area.
"It was just the perfect fit."
The South Fort Myers HS star chose WKU over offers from Florida, Nebraska, South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, and several others.
Listed at 6-foot-5, 320 pounds, Fennell is classified as an offensive guard, but is being recruited to play at WKU on the defensive line--a major factor that affected his decision.
Fennell said he's been forming a relationship with WKU assistant coach Raymond Woodie.
"When I called him and told him I was committing, he said his jaw dropped," Fennell said. "He was so excited."
The three-star lineman said he hasn't visited WKU's campus yet, but plans to soon.
"I haven't been there (WKU) yet," Fennell said. "I want to whenever we have a bye week, or a Thursday game."
Fennell said it was a huge relief to be finished with the recruiting process.
"It feels so good to get this off my shoulders," the Fort Myers standout said. "I'm glad it's done and over with.
"I know where my heart is, my mind is, where I want to go. And that's Western Kentucky."
The No. 61 overall ranked player in Florida, Fennell is the 10th commitment in WKU's 2013 recruiting class, joining fellow three-star's Chris Huhn and Marcus Adams on the offensive and defensive line.
Fennell is the second prospect to commit to WKU with a 5.7 Rivals Rating in school history, joining Class of 2012 DT Tyrone Pearson.
However, Fennell is ranked higher nationally at his position than Pearson (No. 18 OG vs. No. 36 DT), making Fennell the highest ranked WKU commit in school history.
