EAST LANSING - Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio showed a progressive side on Tuesday, when asked about his opinions of the Spartans' Nike Pro Combat uniforms, which were unveiled by the shoe company earlier in the day.
"I like 'em," Dantonio said of the uniforms, which use bronze as a primary color.
Michigan State will wear the uniforms during its home game against Michigan on Oct. 15.
Dantonio said he had mentioned to some players that he was going to Hawaii to meet with some Nike representatives during the off-season. Dantonio said sophomore defensive end William Gholston approached him before he left for the meeting and asked if Michigan State could get in on the new Nike Pro Combat Uniform trend. Dantonio told Gholston that he would mention it to Nike representatives.
"I just threw it out there (to Nike)," Dantonio said. "They came back with a product. I asked our players if they liked it. Our players are very, very excited about it. I like it. I think it's cutting edge. We are going to wear them for one game and it will make a statement for one game.
"I initially bounced the uniform off the (players in our) unity council, if they wanted to make any changes. They were all in. Very excited about it. I did that with our administration as well, just to show them.
"This is about recruiting. This is about young people. This is about being on the cutting edge of things. This is about change sometimes, not change for the long haul. I think what Nike tried to do was take everything we were about as Spartans and mold that into those uniforms.
"So I was very happy and excited with what they came down with."
