Crimson Skunks Gray
The Crimson team skunked the Gray team, 21-0 on Saturday at Martin Stadium as redshirt senior running back Chantz Staden scored twice on the ground and redshirt junior running back Logwone Mitz caught a 16-yard touchdown pass while the first-team defense held the second-team offense scoreless on the afternoon.
"I was very happy with their focus, their energy was good," Wazzu head football coach Paul Wulff said. "There were a few mistakes obviously, but I thought the one offense did a nice job of moving the football. The one defense did very well, a few missed tackles in there, but overall it was pretty good. There were quite a few guys not playing which is good in the big picture because it allows more guys to play and help our depth grow."
Staden, who finished with 86 yards on 10 carries, opened the scoring with a one-yard rush, capping an eight-play, 64-yard drive. He also scored from nine yards out, two plays after picking up 51 yards on a second down rush. His second touchdown came on a four-play, 60-yard drive, with all four plays coming on Staden carries.
On the Crimson's second scoring drive, Mitz caught his only pass of the day - a screen pass from sophomore quarterback Jeff Tuel - and took it in for a 16-yard touchdown. The touchdown capped a six-play, 65-yard drive. Mitz also rushed 10 times for 59 yards.
Tuel completed 11-of-16 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown during the game. In WSU's three spring scrimmages, he went 25-of-41 for 297 yards. He threw three touchdowns and tossed just one interception.
"With the one offense Jeff played the first three quarters and I thought his accuracy was good," Wulff said. "He made good decisions and we operated pretty well. When Marshall [Lobbestael] was in with the one offense he did some good things, moved the football. I thought the quarterbacks did a nice job."
Junior wide receiver Jared Karstetter led the Cougars in both receptions (four) and yards (48). Ten different Cougars caught a pass during the game.
Defensively, redshirt junior cornerback Aire Justin recorded the game's only interception, and three different Cougars combined for four sacks - two from redshirt junior defensive tackle Brandon Rankin and one each from redshirt senior defensive end Kevin Kooyman and redshirt senior linebacker Myron Beck. The first-team defense also recorded two fumble recoveries.
"I thought the defensive line played very well," Wulff said. "They are flying around, playing well. [Defensive line] Coach [Malik] Roberson has done a great job with the group and they get better and better all the time. They are playing real good football right now.
"Brandon is going to give us a unique pass rush from the defensive tackle position that we haven't had here since Rien Long was here. His quickness off the ball can disrupt some things in the run game and pass game. No question Brandon is going to be a great addition to our defense."
