Lake Travis quarterback Brewer commits to Tech
Michael Brewer announced his commitment to Texas Tech on Friday afternoon before a crowd of teammates, coaches and family.Lake Travis quarterback
"I felt like the program is on the up and up, and for them to be on the up and up from where they've already gotten means a lot to me," Brewer said. "It's a huge relief, a nice burden to have off my shoulders, and I'm ready to concentrate on spring ball."
Brewer is the son and grandson of former UT quarterbacking stars (dad Robert played at Texas in 1981-82 and grandfather Charley was UT's QB from 1953-55) but the Horns offered only a grayshirt for 2012.
Texas has offered only one quarterback for 2011 with four already on scholarship and Belton's David Ash committed to Texas for the '11 Class.
Texas Tech was the first Big 12 school to offer Brewer with former Tech coach Mike Leach being a huge advocate for the 6-0 Brewer. While his dad Robert Brewer played at Richardson, Charley Brewer played at Lubbock.
Brewer also had an offer from Tulsa, where former Lake Travis coach Chad Morris was named an assistant last month. Brewer also had offers from Rice, Auburn, East Carolina, Baylor, Kansas and Arizona State.
Lake Travis has produced rising Texas starter Garrett Gilbert and graduating Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing.
Brewer is hoping to lead the Cavaliers on a run toward their fourth straight state championship. The team will enter the 2010 season having won three consecutive 4A titles and 46 consecutive games dating back to 2007.
Texas Tech is coming off a 9-4 season and a win in the Alamo Bowl. Tommy Tuberville takes over as the team's head coach, and Brewer said was impressed by Tuberville and the staff he's putting together.
"Coach Tuberville is a great guy, a great leader and someone who is bringing a great staff with lots of experience and lots of football knowledge," Brewer said.
