D-Line Steps Into Limelight at UC
MORGANTOWN--Throughout his seven year tenure at West Virginia, Rich Rodriguez has grown accustomed to hearing that his favored 3-3-5 stack defense is not capable of producing any type of consistent pass rush. With its performance against Cincinnati on Saturday, the WVU defense may have once and for all exposed that sentiment as myth.
Lining up against one of the most dynamic offenses it will face this season, the Mountaineers defense more than held up to the test, allowing just 84 yards rushing and 23 points. Most impressive of all, however, was the WVU pass rush: once a perceived weakness, West Virginia's veteran defensive line and linebackers combined to sack dangerous Bearcats quarterback Ben Mauk on five different occasions.
