Chizik stays on course despite struggles
AUBURN -- Making sense of the Tigers' current situation isn't easy.
It's not easy to discern in print. The past two weeks have been a mess, even coach Gene Chizik would agree, but truly understanding the hows and whys of the Tigers' surprising start is a difficult proposition.
Does anyone really know?
Let's start with facts. This is not the first time Auburn has opened a season 0-2. Pat Dye was here in 1984 and parlayed that slow start into a 9-4 season. Tommy Tuberville was here in 2003 and ended up with eight wins.
That experience, falling well short of what that team should have accomplished, played a huge role in the Tigers' 2004 renaissance. Are the team's current struggles setting the scene for another push for redemption?
I'm not so sure.
The 1984 team had several future NFL stars - namely Bo Jackson and Brent Fullwood. The 2004 team had 18 lettermen who went on to play in the NFL. That's more than a smattering of talent.
