Aggies keeping Shumard loose
Rumors that Danny Baker had been replaced at left tackle by senior Michael Shumard ran rampant in the week following Texas A&M's season-opening win over New Mexico, which was also Baker's first start as an Aggie and first game at tackle.
Those rumors, however, were proven premature by head coach Mike Sherman on Monday who said with a gruff nod and a "uh huh" that Baker was still A&M's left tackle.
Part of those rumors, however, was true. Shumard did get some time at tackle during the week.
"This past week we practiced guys at different positions to afford us the opportunity to create more depth and figure out what our best combinations would be," Sherman said. "Mike did play a little bit at left tackle, but he was basically out sick Thursday and Friday. He didn't get a chance to do much to this point."
Shumard is used to playing tackle after starting at left tackle during the 2008 season, but he has consistently said that he's more comfortable inside at guard. During August training camp, Shumard worked mostly at left guard but also got time at right and left tackle.
For the most part it's for added depth at a position where the Aggies are extremely thin.
