Judge Joe Brown
"Judge Joe Brown." A nickname that started at local ABC affiliate KAKE caught on with the other Wichita news channels and instantly became a common reference to Wichita (KS) Bishop Carroll tight end Joe Brown.
Born and raised in Wichita, Brown is a proud Kansan who looks past the occasional nights with nothing to do and sees the kinda people of his community that he has learned to love and respect. And while he may be a KU fan despite his brother supporting Kansas State, the ultimate truth is that Brown is now a proud Colorado State Ram who will sign his letter of intent on Wednesday.
"Mostly, I'm looking forward to just playing," said Brown from his home in Wichita Monday evening. "I'm kind of nervous because I don't know anyone, but hopefully everyone is cool. I'm just ready for football."
Many have asked whether Brown is an over sized wide receiver or a true tight end. He was able to kindly clarify by informing that he is neither.
"I play tight end, but I play a lot of receiver stuff too. I also play fullback and halfback, so I play a lot of positions."
What about in college?
"When Coach Fairchild came he said I'd probably do a lot of the same that I did at [Bishop Carrol]. I'll get to play tight end, full back, and slot receiver."
By the sound of things, it appears that Brown will eventually become Kory Sperry 2.0 with the roles that the Rams senior tight end played in 2008, helping lead CSU to a New Mexico Bowl title.
While it may seem like Brown is a versatile player on the football field, this two sport athlete is even more surprising on the basketball court.
"Actually, this year I'm playing point guard," said the 6-foot-3, 215 pound CSU commit. "I'm by far the biggest player that I ever match up against
I usually play forward or on the wing, I don't know, I play just about everywhere."
In 8th grade and freshman year, Brown played AAU basketball with four local players who will be signing FBS letters of intent this month, including the nation's top prospect in the class of 2009, Wichita (KS) East running back Bryce Brown.
Brown admitted that he may miss basketball once he is in full football mode, but he love for the hardwood isn't close to the passion he has for playing football.
Something Ram fans may also be happy to know is that Brown also believes that the Mountain West Conference should receive an automatic bid to the Bowl Championship Series, especially after Utah's performance this season.
"I think the MWC should definitely a chance, especially showing how good Utah was this year. If any team in the conference shows they deserve it, they should definitely give the Mountain West a chance. I can see how it may be harder comparing the competition to the Big Twelve or the SEC, but the Mountain West should definitely get a chance."
