Williams to declare for NFL Draft
Michael Crabtree won't be the only Red Raider underclassmen to forgo his remaining eligibility and head to the NFL.
RedRaiderSports.com has confirmed that junior defensive end Brandon Williams will declare for the 2009 NFL Draft after receiving a third-round grade from the NFL's College Advisory Committee.
"I've decided to enter into the draft this year," said Williams on Monday. "I felt like it was that time. It was a family decision.
"There weren't any financial reasons behind it. We sat down and talked about it and felt like it was the best decision."
The decision to leave, though, did not come easily.
"It was real hard," he said. "I'm leaving the coaches and leaving everything behind. I believe it's the best thing for me to do."
Though he came to Texas Tech as an unheralded prospect, Williams quickly blossomed once he arrived on campus and saw meaningful playing time as a true freshman. As a junior, he led the Big 12 in sacks and was named First Team All-Big 12 by the league's head coaches.
As for his immediate future, Williams will be returning to the Metroplex and preparing for the NFL Draft with a familiar face.
"I'm about to go to this game in Dallas on McKinney with Crabtree and start training."
Williams ends his career as the Red Raiders' fourth all-time sack leader.
