Series by series: UW's defense against Cal-Poly

BadgerBlitz.com MADISON, Wis. - Defensively, the Wisconsin football team was unable to get the Cal-Poly offense off the field. The Mustangs held the ball for two-thirds of the game and had scoring drives of 11, 10, 15 and 15 plays. But in the end, after three missed extra points from its kicker, Cal-Poly came up short, losing to the Badgers 36-35.
The following is a series by series review of UW's defensive series:
First quarter:
Defensive series No. 1: Started on Cal-Poly 40 yard line following John Clay fumble. Plays: 11 Yards given up: 60 Result: Two-yard Ryan Mole touchdown run. (7-0 Cal-Poly)
Key play: Cal-Poly slowly moved down the field with its wing-T offensive scheme. Facing second and eight, Mole broke a run for 15 yards before he was brought down at the Badger two yard line.
Defensive series No. 2: Started on Cal-Poly 14 yard line following Brad Nortman punt. Plays: 6 Yards given up: 11 Result: 58-yard Harlen Prather punt.
Key play: O'Brien Schofield came free off the edge and dropped Mustangs quarterback Jonathan Dally for a five-yard sack.
Second quarter:
Defensive series No. 3: Started on Cal-Poly 47 yard line following Nortman punt. Plays: 4 Yards given up: 11 Result: 35-yard Prather punt.
Key play: Cal-Poly tailback Jono Grayson was whistled for a false start that backed the Mustangs into a second and 14 hole.
Defensive series No. 4: Started on Cal-Poly 29 yard line following kickoff. (13-7 Cal-Poly) Plays: 10 Yards given up: 71 Result: 2-yard Dally touchdown run. (20-7 Cal-Poly)
Key play: With his team out of field goal range and facing a third and five situation, James Noble rushed for eight yards and a first down before Aubrey Pleasant made the tackle.
Defensive series No. 5: Started at Cal-Poly 24 yard line following kickoff. (20-14 Cal-Poly) Plays: 1 Yards given up: 4 Result: End of half.
Third quarter:
Defensive series No. 6: Started on Cal-Poly 20 yard line following second half kickoff. Plays: 3 Yards given up: 9 Result: 48-yard Prather punt.
Key play: DeAndre Levy brought Jon Hall down just shy of the marker on third and three to force the Mustangs punt.
Defensive series No. 7: Started on Cal-Poly 24 yard line following second half kickoff. Plays: 15 Yards given up: 58 Result: 35-yard Andrew Gardner field goal. (23-14 Cal-Poly)
Key play: The Badgers had forced Cal-Poly into a fourth and three situation, but on the play, Dally rushed for eight yards and a first down. The play kept the drive alive and allowed Gardner an opportunity to add to the score, which he did.
Fourth quarter:
Defensive series No. 8: Started on Cal-Poly 24 yard line following kickoff. (23-21 Cal-Poly) Plays: 15 Yards given up: 76 Result: Two-yard Noble touchdown rush. (29-21)
Key play: With the Mustangs lining up for a field goal on fourth and six, Schofield was flagged for a neutral zone infraction. Then, on fourth and one, Dally sneaked through a wide-open middle gap to pick up the first down. Three plays later, the Mustangs scored the touchdown.
Defensive series No. 9: Started at midfield following turnover on downs. Plays: 3 Yards given up: 1 Result: 37-yard Prather punt.
Key play: On third and nine, Dally threw a pass in the direction of Ramses Barden but the Mustang's best receiver was unable to haul it in.
Defensive series No. 10: Started at Cal-Poly 26 yard line following kickoff. (29-29) Plays: 8 Yards given up: 45 Result: Missed 46-yard field goal.
Key play: With time running out in regulation, Cal-Poly was driving on the Badgers. Eventually the Mustangs got itself into a game-winning field goal situation, but Jake West's field goal attempt was not anywhere close to going in.
Overtime:
Defensive series No. 11: Started at Wisconsin 25 yard line. Plays: 1 Yards given up: 25 Result: 25-yard Barden touchdown reception.
Key play: Following the touchdown, Gardner missed his third extra point attempt of the game. The miss allowed the Badgers to win the game with a touchdown and extra point, which it did.
