Video: Maxwell leads Midland to district crown
AUBURN, Mich. - Playing on the home field of the only team to beat you can be a daunting task. Going into that situation without your feature running back can be downright frightening.
That was the plot that Michigan State commitment Andrew Maxwell and his Midland teammates found themselves in on Friday night. But the Elite 11 quarterback and Midland overcame a season-ending injury to their star tail back, an icy cold and windy November night, and the hostile crowd at Bay City Western to upend the home team, 24-14.
Midland trailed 14-10 at half after Western quarterback Matt Grew broke contain and scored on touchdown runs of 82 and 40 yards respectively.
"We came out in the first half and we didn't play the best half," said Maxwell. "At halftime we kind of had to take a second look at ourselves and what we wanted out of the season. I think we showed in the second half with the heart and the emotion we played with how much this means to us."
Bay City Western was responsible for the Chemics' lone loss in 2008 and the surprise champion in the SVL.
