Corner depth a premium for MSU
Melvin Smith has coached some elite cornerbacks in his decade at Mississippi State but says this unit may be his best.
Smith, who is in his second stint in Starkville, has tutored three All-Americans and six All-SEC corners but the 2008 Bulldog squad has more depth than any he's coached in the past.
"We're in the best situation at cornerback at Mississippi State since I've been coaching here," Smith said. "I know we had Fred Smoot and Robert Bean one year but we didn't have the depth. We didn't have this many corners. I think we are in good shape at cornerback."
Even with losing Anthony Johnson for the season after being suspended for his involvement in a spring firearms discharge, Smith feels the Bulldogs' depth gives them the potential to be strong at corner.
"It was tougher on Anthony than it was us," Smith said. "Losing him made room for somebody else. It was really tougher on Anthony and I feel real bad for him. I don't think it really affected us that much because we had other guys. Losing Anthony hurts Anthony. We've been blessed with enough guys."
