Stanzi quickly on the road to recovery
After suffering an injury to his throwing shoulder during a strength and conditioning drill in late July, sophomore quarterback Rick Stanzi was quickly on the road to recovery as he started rehabbing basically the next day in preparation for August camp. At media day, Stanzi talked about his rehab from injury, the competition at quarterback, and much more.
Q: What are some of your personal goals going into the season?
STANZI: My personal goals? I don't really have any of those set right now. We're working as a team right now. Just coming out here, everyone is busting their butt. We're excited about the year.
Q: Coach has kind of said everything is open. Are practices pretty intense knowing that?
STANZI: Yeah. It's always like that, and that's the only kind of atmosphere you need to have a successful team. You want to have everyone competing and everyone busting their butt to get to that number one spot. That's the only way we're going to be successful.
Q: How did you feel you have come along with the offense in the past year?
STANZI: It was really helpful to go through another spring ball. This will be my third camp since I redshirted and you kind of get a free year that first year and then each year you learn a little bit more. With time, you pretty much have it all figured out and then it's just confidence.
Q: Has Jake taught you anything this year?
STANZI: Oh yeah. We're all trying to help each other out. We're all a unit. Coach always tells us as quarterbacks we're all a unit and we're part of a bigger unit, which is the offense. We're all working together.
Q: Is the quarterback position open in your eyes? I know Coach Ferentz said that after spring practice.
STANZI: You know, I just go out there everyday and practice and whatever Coach says, that's what I do.
Q: How did you hurt your shoulder?
STANZI: It was an accident during a training drill. It's nothing too serious, so I should be back pretty soon.
Q: Was that a pretty big scare obviously being a quarterback and hurting your shoulder?
STANZI: Yeah. It's never a good thing getting injured on any part of the body for any one of us. I think the trainers do a great job and our strength and conditioning staff to a great job of getting players back quick, so I'm not really worried about it.
Q: Did you just get started on the road back basically right away?
STANZI: Yeah. I started rehabbing right away with Coach Doyle and Paul Federici. Everyone is making sure that I get back.
