Allen enjoys follow-up visit to Ole Miss
Drew Allen loved his visit to Oxford, Miss., and Ole Miss so much in March that he wanted to check it all out again, figuring the second time around things wouldn't seem so perfect.
Allen figured correctly. The second time things were indeed different.
This time around, Allen liked Ole Miss even more.
"It went great," Allen said as he and his family left Oxford on their way back to San Antonio, Texas. "Coach (Kent) Austin couldn't have been any nicer and Coach (Houston) Nutt and the whole coaching staff is great."
Allen arrived in Oxford Monday, watched a workout, visited with Ole Miss players (including another San Antonio native, freshman running back Devin Thomas, attended the L-O-U Rebel Club cookout and watched film.
"I basically spent all day yesterday with Coach Austin until about 9 p.m.," Allen said. "I also spent a lot of time with Coach Nutt. He was just showing us around. They're just really great guys. I had a really great time. Yesterday we were getting ready to get around to watching film but we started talking and we actually had to watch film this morning. Coach Austin showed his schemes and what he brings to the table for Ole Miss and I was very impressed. I mean, he's a mastermind and he knows his stuff."
Allen said he and Nutt and Austin have developed an extremely close relationship.
"Without a doubt, Coach Nutt and I and Coach Austin have had that type of a relationship since I came here in March," Allen said. "They assured me that they're going to fling the ball around, so that's good."
Allen said the Rebels' offensive braintrust also convinced him and his father that the 6-foot-5, 198-pound, three-star prospect was the No. 1 quarterback on the Ole Miss recruiting board.
"Without a doubt," Allen said, emphasizing each word. "I always kind of felt that way throughout this whole process. Coach Austin has spent so much time with me and they went above and beyond this time. I wanted to come back a second time to reassure myself that I like this place. I wanted to interact with all the players and I was able to. They're going to have new apartment dorms where if I were to come, they'd be there, so it was a really nice, really good trip."
Allen, who threw for 2,589 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior, said his recruiting travels are over. He plans to attend a Top Gun camp in Orlando, Fla., later this month. He's hoping to make a decision and commit to his school of choice in the next few weeks as well.
"I feel strong about Ole Miss," Allen said. "I feel strong about some other schools right now. It's to the point where I just have to see where I really want to go. My parents' opinions are really going to come into it as well, but at the end, it's my choice completely. Right now, I want to get home and start thinking about it more in depth by this weekend and we'll see how it goes. I'm not sure right now."
Allen said Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest are his five finalists.
