A&M after out-of-state linebacker
Former Alabama defensive coordinator Joe Kines was working one of the Crimson Tide's camps prior to the 2006 season when he came across an underclassman linebacker named Nico Johnson. Kines did not stay on with the Alabama staff under new head coach Nick Saban after the 2006 season, but he could not forget the name of the linebacker who caught his eye.
Now, Kines has returned to the college ranks in the same capacity at Texas A&M and it just happens to be a lucky coincidence that the linebacker is coming upon his senior year at Andalusia High School in Alabama.
Kines remembered Johnson and sent a request to new Andalusia head coach Heath Harmon for the current junior's film. The tape indicated that Kines' memory was pretty good and, based on his highlight film, the Texas A&M staff offered Johnson a scholarship.
