Dennis, Brooks clash at Whataburger tournament
Richland High School didn't start the Whataburger tournament in the fashion that they were hoping in their home gym at the W.G. Thomas Birdville Coliseum as they fell to Houston Strake Jesuit, 64-57. The matchup that everyone had been waiting to see since the brackets were drawn involved Richland junior guard Nolan Dennis matching up with Strake Jesuit junior guard Joey Brooks.
Despite seeing the Crusaders win and advance to face Louisiana powerhouse Monroe Carroll Friday in the second round, Brooks won the individual battle as well. He poured in 26 points while holding Dennis to just 12.
Dennis, however, is the one being chased by schools far and wide. Assistant coaches from high-major Division I programs such as Texas A&M, Kansas, Texas Tech and Marquette were in the gym to check out the Rivals.com five-star prospects, ranked No. 21 in the Rivals 2009 Top 150. Unlike Brooks, who is already committed to Notre Dame, Dennis isn't looking to make a decision any time soon.
The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Rivals.com five-star prospect has scholarship offers from Texas A&M, Texas, Baylor, UConn, Indiana, Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina, USC, UCLA and Stephen F. Austin.
