Smelley ready for national spotlight
Chris Smelley passed the first true test of his career with flying colors last Saturday.
Now he has to do it again, this time against a nationally ranked opponent.
Last week, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier proclaimed Smelley would play the entire game against Mississippi State barring an unforeseen meltdown. That never happened, and the Tuscaloosa, Ala. native took every snap for the Gamecocks in the 38-21 victory that improved USC to 4-1 overall.
Smelley is confident he'll go the distance once more Thursday night against upstart No. 8 Kentucky in a game that could shape the SEC East race.
Smelley completed 19-of-37 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns against the respected Bulldogs' defense. USC scored on six of its 13 possessions, including five touchdowns.
