Defense: Inside the Tulsa Gameplan
When Brent Venables took his defense into Tulsa's Chapman Stadium last Friday night he expected to see some new wrinkles from TU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.
But what he found was a lot more than new wrinkles. It was more of a complete overhaul to the TU offense.
"You tip your hat scheme-wise because it took some adjusting," said Venables. "Some of the things you saw you haven't seen on tape. That's a credit to them and some schemes they came up with."
What Venables and his defense saw were offensive lineman rolling the pocket to protect quarterback Paul Smith. They also saw some personnel groupings that they hadn't seen before on tape.
Oklahoma figured out very early in the game that putting pressure on Smith was going to be a difficult task. And that's why we never saw an all-out blitz attack on the TU offense.
