Stewart escapes shadows in first start
Darian Stewart had the perfect stage for his first career start.
Sanford Stadium. Over 90,000 hostile Georgia fans. National cable television.
Despite the considerable pressures, Stewart, the strong safety, shined by leading South Carolina with nine tackles and two pass breakups. All of the tackles were solo jobs.
Head coach Steve Spurrier estimated Stewart made four touchdown-saving tackles during the game. He chased down Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno from behind to tackle him after a 50-yard gain into USC territory.
"It was a good game for me," Stewart said. "I wasn't nervous at all. I just went out there and did what I had to do."
But Stewart said his best hit came midway through the second quarter when he tackled Georgia's Mikey Henderson for a six-yard loss on a third-down screen pass from the USC 10-yard line.
