UCF linebackers have something to prove
The unit took a lot of criticism for the defensive woes last season, but UCF's linebackers want to change all that. The position isn't deep, but the Knights have a solid first unit of Cory Hogue, Chance Henderson and Steven Baker, who feel they have what it takes to be a strength on defensive side of the ball.
It wasn't without some preseason shuffling though. Linebackers coach Dave Huxtable had to move some players around when it was discovered Jordan Richards, who had been slated to be a starter, wouldn't be available because of injury. He shifted Baker to Richards' strongside linebacker spot, elevated Henderson to No. 1 middle linebacker and Hogue returned to weakside linebacker.
The unit is led by Hogue, who leads all linebackers with 15 career starts. He's had a solid spring and preseason after missing the latter part of 2006 with a hand injury.
"Cory Hogue is the top linebacker back, in my opinion," said head coach George O'Leary. "He's been a productive player for us, but staying healthy is important."
