Byrd working hard to stay on top
Looking ahead a few weeks to fall camp, one of the most contentious position battles will be for the starting free safety position. Junior C.J. Byrd was the first team safety for all of spring camp and on G-Day, but redshirt freshman Reshad Jones is extremely talented and was impressive this spring. Byrd thinks Jones is pushing him this offseason to raise the level of his workouts and practice intensity to prepare for the fall.
With so much on the line in fall camp for Byrd and Jones, free safety may end up be the fiercest secondary competition in several years in Athens.
"There will always be heavy competition between me and Reshad. He is a great player and I think he keeps me working hard. I think he will have me ready to play [on September 1]," said Byrd.
