Big play Ray
Mike Pegram
Peegs.com At one time in his high school days, 5-foot-9, 170-pound Ray Fisher was a pretty heralded prospect at Glenville High School in Ohio. There he stood out as a two-way back for Ted Ginn, Sr.'s team as an underclassmen despite a roster full of high major recruits. Then just before it came time for him to really hog the spotlight as a senior, an injury that led to surgery on his right knee took away his entire season. That absence helped Fisher fall a bit off the radar and led to a transition type true freshman campaign this past fall in Bloomington.
"I feel way more comfortable," said Fisher. "Last year I was kind of tentative doing things because I had torn my ACL (in high school) but now I got the feeling in this spring ball and really saw and recognized a lot of things out there and just feel way more comfortable."
Despite that tentative play the young receiver earned one start last fall and played he all 11 games for Indiana. He caught 24 passes for 215 yards.
One thing Fisher did not do during his initial campaign was get a touchdown. On Saturday he showed that shouldn't happen again when he caught a short right sideline pass from quarterback Kellen Lewis and broke free to scamper for a 67-yard score, the biggest play of Saturday's season ending spring scrimmage.
"Was just thinking catch the ball and get upfield just like coach preaches to me everyday," said Fisher. "When I got the ball I saw (James) Hardy close him off and I just took it."
