Spring Practice hits the halfway mark
Raju Woodward
BeaverBlitz.com Despite good weather outside, the Oregon State football team practiced indoors today in the Truax Center. There was a high school team in attendance, as well as several recruits. Joe Newton was also a surprise visitor at practice. There's not much to report because the team wasn't in pads, which fit the laid back atmosphere of the entire practice. The linebackers and special teams, however, practiced outdoors. So this report will be centered heavily on offense.
- Derrick Doggett continues to be bothered by back spasms and didn't even dress today. He, however, was providing lots of encouragement to his defensive teammates throughout practice. Brandon Powers was also in street clothes as he took practice off to rest some soreness he has been experiencing. Backup wide receiver Chris Johnson was absent. Roy Schuening finally dressed down, but took it easy today. As a result, Adam Speer and Gregg Peat continued to work with the first team offense. The reps these two are getting are invaluable and bode well for the Beavers in the future.
- Both quarterbacks looked sharp. Sean Canfield looks like a No. 1 guy right now. Cool, calm and collected out there. The way he slings the ball so effortlessly, whether it's on a quick out or deep ball down the sideline, evokes memories of Derek Anderson. After all, No. 14 made every throw look as easy as 1, 2, 3. Speaking of No. 14, the guys currently wearing that number for Beavers, walk-on Brennan Sim, has a pretty good arm himself. His arm strength has been impressive all spring and he throws a nice, tight spiral. Sim could end up becoming a decent QB for the Beavers down the road.
