One of the hallmark mantras of defense is to "bring the pain." For the Pitt defense, there was some pain to be had on Saturday, but it wasn't going in the right direction.
"It hurts," linebacker Clint Session said after the Panthers' 38-23 loss to Michigan State. The game featured the Spartans rushing for 335 yards and, perhaps more significantly, converting 11 of 15 third downs. Hence a large part of the pain for Session.
"The thing that hurts the most is when you're holding a team and they keep converting on third down. That's what they did," Session said. "They had a lot of options on third down. They had a mobile quarterback, they had a lot of good receivers, and that's what they did: they converted on third down.
"That hurt us a lot."
