Hawkins Set To Make Return To SEC
With the opening game with Tennessee fast approaching, there's at least one Cal Bear who won't be shocked by the humidity that comes with playing in the Deep South.
In fact, he used to be an SEC kind of player.
Junior receiver LaVelle Hawkins originally signed with LSU out of high school, but made his way back to the West Coast after just one game. He has no problem with the climate the Bears are about to face.
"I was fine with it," said Hawkins, who caught 18 passes for 171 yards in his debut season with Cal. "I'm from Stockton and it's 110 degrees there at times. It's not humid, but 110 degrees is 110 degrees."
Hawkins was one of the hottest high school prospects in the nation coming out of high school. He starred at Stockton High and was a prep All-American. So why didn't he end up in the Pac-10?
"Growing up, I would always watch those SEC schools on TV," he said. "I didn't really know much about the Pac-10."
