Saturday Scrimmage Report: Offense
Saturday's scrimmage was a battle between the defense and the offense throughout the night, but it gave the best opportunity of the fall camp session to evaluate the players. It was by far the most competitive setting the players have been involved in for a while and there were a lot of things that stood out.Xavier Smith was the best running back of the night. He showed a nice ability to change direction and his vision was superb. Chris Henry also had a solid night, but he needs to start having good or even great nights if he is going to hold off Smith.
Henry may get his chance at the beginning of the season but he's going to have to play well right away because he has some talented running backs behind him. Henry did not do anything wrong on Saturday night, and even played well. However, Smith did everything right and then some, making the running back competition even closer than it has been before.
In addition to Smith and Henry, Derke Robinson, Terry Longbons, and Glyndon Bolasky also received a pretty good amount of carries.
As we know by now, Robinson missed a good portion of the camp, and it showed on Saturday. He got drilled on two different occasions and missed a block that would have led to a major sack on Willie Tuitama. Robinson still has a lot to learn in terms of the playbook and assignments, but the potential is certainly there.
Longbons received limited opportunities but was pretty impressive. He had a substantial gain to the outside on one carry and although he does not get a lot of attention, he is certainly going to be a sleeper for major carries as the season continues.
Lastly, Bolasky was very impressive. He was able to score a touchdown and the offense moved well when he was in the game. He showed a nice ability to be able to take a hit and showed off nice vision as well. He may be an underdog in the running back battle, but it seems as if he will certainly be a contributor in the future.
