Thompson Heats Up
The Oklahoma Sooners went through their third practice of the fall on Saturday as Paul Thompson continued to progress behind center and the Sooners put on shoulder pads and helmets for the first time. Bob Stoops put his team through another two-and-a-half hour workout with conditioning drills at the end of practice. The Sooners will hold their last public practice on Sunday at 5pm before they close off the offseason fall practices for the first time in the Stoops era.
The Sooner program has been through much turmoil over the last three days and Monday appears to be a day where Stoops will try and regain some focus in his fall camp by closing off practices to the outside world for good.
Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will also be implemented changes in the Sooner offense to complement the strengths of Paul Thompson. Those changes will now become heavily guarded secrets.
Thompson continues to progress each and every day during practices. His performances so far should give Wilson plenty of room to tinker over the next few weeks.
"I didn't think I'd be where I'm at this quick on the third day," said Thompson of his performances thus far. "I'm making a few mental errors and I'm throwing the ball pretty well. I played it before and I guess it's like riding a bike. I definitely feel comfortable out there."
Thompson has been finding plenty of receivers during practices. Malcolm Kelly has been making several big plays over the first three days of practices. But one player who stood out the most on Saturday, was sophomore receiver Quentin Chaney.
"If he can continue the way he's going, sometimes after that third year, if that light's coming on now, we sure would love it because he's giving us some depth," said Wide Receiver Coach Kevin Sumlin of Chaney. ". I've been kind of pleased. It's only be three days so we haven't done anything yet. Maturity is about being consistent and that's over a period of time. In three days he's been pretty good and the group's been pretty good."
